PDF documents have no usable title on Next.js

What this is

3 PDF documents have no document title, or they are not shown in the window title. Browser tabs and screen readers then announce the file name, such as "scan_0042.pdf".

Who it affects

  • Screen reader users
  • People with cognitive disabilities
  • People with low vision

Standards

How to fix it

  1. Set a short, descriptive title in the document properties of the source file (File → Properties → Title) before exporting.
  2. In the PDF's Initial View settings choose "Show: Document Title" (the export option is often called "Display document title").
  3. Replace the file on your site.

On Next.js

Fix the PDF in the program it was made with (Word, Google Docs, InDesign): turn on the accessibility options when exporting ("Tagged PDF" / "Create accessible PDF"), set the document title and language in the file properties, then export again. Replace the file in `public/` (or your storage bucket), keeping the same path so existing links keep working.
